The meaning of the Cross                                           1.     The ultimate demonstration of God's LOVE Many people would say that it is the cross is the symbol of Christianity. Others would say that it is the means of Roman justice as capital punishment for criminals. Both of these answers are insufficient to the real meaning behind the cross because it is the ultimate demonstration of the love of God. Paul said in Romans 5:8 "but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. " The cross is the proof that there is no length to which God will not go to win the hearts of men. It shows how far God will go to bring us to Him. 2.   Forgiveness among believers Matthew records the fourth of Jesus' five major discourses in his Gospel in chapter 18. As His earthly ministry draws to a close, Jesus has spent considerable time clarifying His identity and mission (chapters 14-17). Forgiveness is ... What is "forgiveness"? To understand this we will, of course, go back to the Scriptures to find our answers. First we will look at some Hebrew words for "forgiveness". The concept of forgiveness is central to the big story of the Bible and must be seen in the wider context of Biblical theology.  From the very beginning of Genesis we find the LORD God active in forgiveness in various covenants He makes with humanity: The Adamic covenant in His promise of Genesis 3:15; The Noahic covenant in saving a remnant from sinful world Genesis 6:13-22; The Abrahamic covenant in God choosing Abraham to be His chosen people in Genesis 12:1-3.
